Fil-Am lawyers hail US high court backing of LGBTQ workers’ rights
LOS ANGELES – The National Filipino American Lawyers Association hailed the Supreme Court’s decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, GA, affirming the rights of LGBTQ people to be free from discrimination in the workplace.
In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court found that LGBTQ individuals are protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and that employers may not discriminate against employees based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
NFALA thanks the individuals and organizations who fought for decades to bring about this historic decision. “Because of their hard work and dedication, we are one-step closer to realizing a more equal and just America,” the organization said in a statement.
“The decision is encouraging amidst the ongoing global health crisis and nationwide demonstrations in support ofBlack lives,” said Philip Nulud, President of NFALA. “Discriminatory employment practices based on a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity have no place in the workplace, or in society. It serves as an important reminder that the fight for true equality for LGBTQ individuals must continue. NFALA has been a constant supporter of LGBTQ equality, and it is committed to continuing such. While the Supreme Court has taken an important step towards eradicating discrimination, we still look forward to seeing a day where the LGBTQ community is treated equally in allregards.”
