Coalition releases Filipino Policy Platform
DAVIS, California — A coalition of organizations serving Filipinos officially released the “2020 Filipino Policy Platform,” a report that highlights the community’s key issues and demands for a “thriving future beyond the Covid-19 crisis.”
Over 20 organizations hosted the 2020 Filipino Policy Symposium last February, with some 150 attendees from across California joining the Bulosan Center at Cal State East Bay in shaping a “united Filipino Policy” to take to the State Capitol.
“From listening to our community partners and from the Center’s own research, there are many Filipino families struggling to pay rent, have lost their jobs, and are falling ill because they are on the frontlines taking care of Covid-19 patients. The platform captures how we have been affected, but also how we are mobilizing to enact community change,” said Katherine Nasol, Director of Policy and Community Engagement.
Filipinos are the largest Asian American and Pacific Islander group in California and are over-represented in front line work such as nursing and elderly care work. (To read the Filipino Policy Platform in its entirety, visit tiny.cc/BulosanPlatform2020.)
As a follow up, there will be a Filipino Policy Townhall on June 10 to raise the platform recommendations to policy makers and the larger community. (For those who are interested in getting involved, be on the lookout for more information regarding this event by following the Bulosan Center’s FB, IG, and website.)
