Instagram is giving carousel posts a major upgrade with the rollout of its new multiple captions feature, a long-awaited addition that allows creators to assign individual captions to every photo or video within a single carousel.

Previously, users were limited to writing one caption that applied to the entire post, often forcing them to squeeze multiple explanations, stories or descriptions into one lengthy block of text.

With the latest update, each slide can now carry its own caption.

According to Instagram, aside from improving storytelling, the update could also strengthen content discoverability on the platform.

Since every slide can contain different keywords, creators now have more opportunities to optimize their posts for Instagram’s search function, potentially increasing visibility across a wider range of topics.

The feature also offers accessibility advantages. By matching captions with the corresponding visual content, the browsing experience becomes more organized for people using assistive technologies, allowing text and imagery to stay synchronized throughout the carousel.

How to use multiple captions

Using the feature is straightforward. Users simply need to create a carousel by selecting two or more photos or videos before proceeding to the final sharing screen.

After tapping the caption field, they can choose between Single Caption and Multiple Captions using the available drop-down menu. From there, they can swipe through each slide and write a unique caption before publishing the post.

There is one limitation, however. The new functionality is available only when creating fresh carousel posts. Existing carousel uploads cannot be edited to include individual captions for each slide.

The update marks another step in Instagram’s ongoing efforts to make its content formats more flexible and creator-friendly.
