Post office branch named in honor of slain Fil-Am San Diego police officer
SAN FRANCISCO — A post office in Chula Vista, California was named in honor of a Filipino American San Diego police officer who was shot and killed during a pedestrian stop last summer.
The post office at 830 Kuhn Drive in Chula Vista became the Jonathan “J.D.” De Guzman Post Office Building during a morning ceremony.
Rep. Susan Davis, D-San Diego proposed the name change, and then-President Barack Obama signed it into law.
San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told the crowd, which included the slain officer’s family members, that De Guzman would be remembered for “the sacrifice he made for our city and for our country and for our community that he loved so dearly,”
De Guzman was shot five times on July 28 during a late-night pedestrian stop. His partner, Officer Wade Irwin, also was seriously wounded but was able to return fire, critically wounding their alleged assailant, ex-convict Jesse Michael Gomez.
Gomez, 56, has recovered and remains jailed on $5 million bail while awaiting trial. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
