Who will win the 2026 World Cup?

will win the 2026 World Cup

The greatest sporting event on earth is here, multiple venues across the United States, Canada and Mexico, 48 teams and only one winner. With the tournament now just days away, the big question is already being debated around the world, who lifts the trophy on July 19?

Betting markets have a clear answer as the opening match approaches. Betinia NJ and other licensed sportsbooks online have Spain installed as the outright favorite, with France right on their heels. England, Brazil and defending champions Argentina round out the top five contenders. But with 48 teams competing, and a knockout path that requires five consecutive wins to achieve glory, margins have never been as tight between being winners or also-rans.

Spain: The team to beat

La Roja arrived in North America confident of their chances. They’re European and Olympic champions and have one of the most talented groups of players on the international stage. A midfield that will likely feature Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, Pedri, Gavi and Fabian Ruiz gives them control. Then, further forward, they have the exciting young superstar Lamine Yamal, who can produce magic on his day. He’s been struggling with injury of late but is set to be fit for the start of the tournament.

France: The danger team

Spain may currently lead the way where the betting is concerned, but France are close behind them and every bit as good as them. Didier Deschamps will lead Les Bleus one final time at a World Cup before stepping down as coach. With the talent he has available to him, especially up front in the form of captain Kylian Mbappe and 2025 Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, you wouldn’t bet against him going out on top and avenging the 2022 World Cup final defeat.

Norway: The outside chance

Norway: The outside chance

Erling Haaland managed to score an impressive 16 goals in qualifying for Norway and will make his debut at a major international tournament in North America. If Norway didn’t have Haaland, they probably wouldn’t be in the conversation of being a team with an outside chance of winning the World Cup. But they do have Haaland, who has enjoyed another great season as a scorer for Manchester City. They also have Martin Odegaard, now a Premier League title winner, supplying him.

The USMNT: A home underdog with a puncher’s chance

The honest truth about the United States at the World Cup is that they’re a long shot. The patriotism is understandable, especially with the tournament being on home soil, but the USMNT haven’t impressed of late. However, what they do have going for them is an elite-level coach in Mauricio Pochettino leading them, and players like Christian Pulisic who can turn games on their head. Winning the World Cup will be the aim, but it’s likely beyond them. However, a run to the latter stages would be an achievement to be proud of.

The verdict

One of the top five teams in the betting, Spain, France, England, Brazil or Argentina, are the likely winners of the 2026 World Cup because of the quality they possess and the strength in depth. However, it remains to be seen what impact the extra number of teams taking part and matches to be played has. Maybe this is the year when an underdog prospers and shocks the world.
