Elano, who was born and raised in Chicago, Ill., has publicly expressed his grief over the loss of  fellow figure skaters, coaches and their family members, who were among those killed after an American Airlines flight and Army helicopter collided and crashed into the Potomac River in the Washington, DC, area on Jan. 29.

The victims were returning home from National Development Camp held in conjunction with the US Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.

“It’s still heartbreaking cuz we see them often and we know about them and it’s just horrible,” Elano told ABC7 News Chicago.
