The Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg has raised safety concerns after vandals repeatedly attacked their community hub in North Point Douglas.

The first incident took place before Christmas last year. Security cameras were smashed and two glass panels on the front door were shattered, according to the group.

On Jan. 25, the center was vandalized again. The air conditioner condenser was knocked to the ground and fences were cut open.

Operating the cultural space since 1980, the nonprofit  Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg is now facing financial challenges, having to shoulder repair costs following the string of attacks.

“With the vandalism costing us a lot of money, it’s not gonna be able to sustain if this goes on,” Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg Chair Aida Champagne told CBC News.

Board members said the repair expenses may lead to the closure of their beloved hub, where they gather for church services, karaoke sessions and ballroom dance classes.

Under Canadian law, if vandalism results in property damage amounting to $5,000, a judge can sentence perpetrators to a maximum of 10 years in prison. A judge may also order restitution to cover a victim’s financial losses related to damages, injury or lost property.

The multiple vandalism incidents have not only led to financial loss but also created fear among the seniors.

The community hub has three tenants, including a Christian church, which has been renting a space at the center for the past eight years.

The congregation leader, Pastor Rodrigo Crispin, said there has been escalating violence in the area, including robbery and car break-ins.

The Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg has reported the vandalism incidents to authorities and is taking safety measures to protect their center.

Plans are underway to install new security cameras. The board of directors also plans to meet with city officials to discuss long-term solutions.
