Fil-Canadian design duo debuts at New York Fashion Week
NEW YORK CITY — This season’s New York Fashion Week showcased several Filipino designers proudly making their mark on one of the fashion world’s biggest stages. Among them were Filipino Canadian designers Limuel Hayag Vilela and Alvin Masangkay Francia.
“We could not believe our eyes when we received the invitation to participate in New York Fashion Week,” said Vilela. He and Francia, both Filipinos running a multi-business consortium in Canada, have come a long way from their humble beginnings in Daet, Camarines Norte. For them, participating in fashion week in New York has been a long-held dream finally realized.
Originally from Quezon Province, Vilela and Francia co-founded Spotlight Couronne Internationale Inc. Philippines (SCI PH). Their journey to New York Fashion Week began with a production and personality development studio that quickly evolved into a fashion brand.
According to Francia, the brand’s origins trace back to Calgary, Alberta, where it initially served as a training ground for aspiring models and pageant contestants, helping them develop the skills and confidence needed for the global stage. The studio quickly gained a reputation for excellence, producing world-class fashion shows in both Canada and the Philippines that showcased local talent and craftsmanship.
For Spring/Summer 2025, the fashion duo presented a diverse collection featuring couture designs for men, women, and children. “The Luxxe Collection strikes a balance between high fashion and playful practicality, perfect for making a statement while staying connected to the vibrancy of city life,” Vilela explained. He emphasized that their ensembles encapsulate elegance infused with youthful charm.
Reflecting on their journey, Vilela and Francia envisioned SCI as more than just a training studio; they aimed to bridge cultures and promote Filipino fashion and artistry not only in Calgary but around the globe.
Their efforts have paid off, as SCI has become a platform for showcasing the works of exceptional Filipino and non-Filipino designers, earning recognition for its stunning presentations and commitment to uplifting local talent. “We are grateful to HiTechModa, the fashion house that recognized our talents and gave us the opportunity to showcase our designs at this year’s NYFW,” Vilela noted.
Founded in 2018, HiTechMODA is an award-winning runway production company that blends traditional fashion shows with innovative concepts to transform the industry. It showcases established, emerging and indie designers, adapting to recent changes in the fashion landscape.
The company emphasizes technology and sustainability, aiming to empower consumers and designers alike. By offering professional, affordable production services in state-of-the-art venues, HiTechMODA creates opportunities for diverse talents, including new designers and students from top fashion schools. Its mission focuses on inspiring creativity in the fashion world.
Meanwhile, part of SCI’s international growth and expansion, the founders have returned to their roots in the Philippines and opened their first boutique at SM City Daet. “This move has allowed us to blend our global perspective with the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines,” Francia explained.
The brand’s designs, influenced by its humble beginnings and Filipino traditions, have resonated with fashion enthusiasts, quickly establishing a loyal following.
With their debut at NYFW, SCI PH is poised to bring their journey full circle, with the help of HiTechModa. Vilela revealed that the Luxxe collection was created in collaboration with a local designer and showcased at the event, embodying the brand’s evolution from a small studio in Calgary to a global fashion powerhouse.
“This collection is not just a display of luxurious designs; it is a celebration of SCI’s mission to promote fashion and the arts across borders, demonstrating that local talents and Filipino craftsmanship can shine on the world’s biggest stages.”
When asked about their venture into fashion and participation in NYFW, Vilela explained, “Beyond our passion for fashion, we draw inspiration from several references, both local and world-renowned designers. Our collection is influenced by our brand ‘Bloom,’ a name we proudly use for every kids’ and teens’ showcase.”
“Like a flower in full bloom, the youth are evolving with boundless potential, ready to transform the world around them. Each opportunity they embrace allows them to grow, thrive, and inspire others, reminding us that their journey is one of constant renewal and limitless possibility.”
Vilela and Francia are proud recipients of The Outstanding Filipino Awards (TOFA) for their excellence in the Filipino Diaspora and Entrepreneurship.
