‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ tops streaming rankings

Viewers watched the supernatural comedy film for 1.4 billion minutes in the first seven days it was available on Netflix

HOLLYWOOD – “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” topped the latest weekly streaming rankings, with viewers watching the supernatural comedy film for 1.405 billion minutes in the first seven days it was available on Netflix, according to figures released Thursday by Nielsen.
There were four other titles that topped the 1 billion minutes watched mark for the week on July 22-29.

Bluey,” which streams on Disney+, rose three spots to second with 1.064 billion minutes watched of the Australian animated children’s series’ 154 episodes, a 2.8 percent increase over the 1.035 billion minutes watched the previous week.

“Cobra Kai” was third for the second consecutive week with 1.048 billion minutes watched of the 55 episodes of Netflix’s sequel to the 1984 film “The Karate Kid,” 3.4 percent less than the 1.085 billion minutes the previous week when the first five episodes of its sixth season were released.

“House of the Dragon,” dropped two spots to fourth with 1.039 billion minutes watched of the 17 episodes of Max’s  “Game of Thrones” prequel, 6.1% less than the 1.107 billion minutes for 16 episodes the previous week.

“Family Guy” rose one spot to fifth with 1.032 billion minutes watched of the 433 episodes of the animated comedy on “Hulu,” 4.2 percent more than the 989 million minutes watched the previous week.

There were four other titles in the latest top 10 that were not in the previous week’s — the long-running CBS action drama “NCIS,” the 2006-13 Showtime crime drama “Dexter,” and the long-running CBS police procedural “Criminal Minds,”  which all stream on Netflix and Paramount+; and the CW football drama “All American,” which streams on Netfix.

The previous week’s leader, ``The Boys” dropped out of the top 10, with viewership of the 32 episodes of the Prime Video satirical superhero series decreasing 44.5 percent from 1.329 billion to 738 million. The fourth season finale of “The Boys” was released the previous week.

Also dropping out of the top 10 were the 2023 animated jukebox musical comedy film “Trolls Band Together” the war film “Land of Bad,” which both stream on Netflix; the 2011-19 USA Network legal drama “Suits,” which streams on Netflix and Peacock; and the dating series “Love Island,” which streams on Hulu, Netflix and Peacock.

There were three titles in the top 10 that stream exclusively on Netflix; two Netflix and Paramount+, one each on Hulu and Netflix and Hulu and Paramount+; and one each that stream exclusively on Disney+, Hulu and Max.

Nielsen also announces streaming viewership of Apple TV+,  Prime Video and Starz programming.

The top 10 consisted of eight acquired programs, one original streaming series and one movie.
The top 10 programs were “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”; “Bluey”; “Cobra Kai”; “House of the Dragon”; “Family Guy”; “Grey’s Anatomy”; “NCIS”; “All American”; “Dexter”; and “Criminal Minds.”

The figures reflect only television set viewing, including such television-connected devices as Roku and Apple TV. Mobile-only viewing is not included in Nielsen’s streaming measurement systems.

While Nielsen releases weekly prime-time broadcast and cable ratings two days after the end of the week, except for holidays, viewership figures for streaming services are not released until 25 days after the end of the week because it takes more time to completely capture assets to report and aggregate streaming viewing, according to Nielsen.
