Trudeau greets Filipinos: ‘Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan’
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has extended his “warmest wishes” to Filipino Canadians and Filipinos communities around the world celebrating the 126th Philippine Independence Day.
“Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan!” Trudeau said in a statement issued Wednesday highlighting the 75 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and the Philippines.
“Canada and the Philippines have a relationship driven by a shared commitment to making life better for both our peoples,” Trudeau said, citing democracy, diversity and climate action as the two countries’ mutual priorities and values.
The prime minister also recognized the “invaluable contributions that Filipino Canadians make to our communities” as he honored Filipino Heritage Month.
“The Filipino diaspora in Canada is nearly one million strong and they are trailblazers in communities across the country,” Trudeau said.
“Their leadership and their dedication to Canada makes our country fairer and more prosperous.”
He invited all Canadians to learn more about the “significant contributions Filipino Canadians have made – and continue to make – to our country.”
“Together, we will keep advancing the friendship between our two nations and build a fairer and more diverse world for Canadians and Filipinos alike,” Trudeau said.
In a statement issued earlier this month, Kamal Khera, minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, honored Filipino Heritage Month and recognized Filipino Canadians for their “positive and meaningful contributions to Canada.”
Khera paid tribute to Fil-Canadian health care professionals for strengthening the country’s health care system and supporting the well-being of Canadian families.
Filipino Canadians are celebrating Filipino Heritage Month with festivals across the country.
