‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ edges out ‘Dune: Part Two’ in box office with $30M

LOS ANGELES – `Kung Fu Panda 4” retained its box office crown this weekend, taking in $30 million one week after opening in first place, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The animated comedy, which stars Jack Black and the voices of Awkwafina, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Ke Huy Quan, Ronny Chieng, Bryan Cranston, Ian McShane, Viola Davis and others, barely edged out “Dune: Part Two,” which grossed $29.1 million in its third week, Comscore reported.
“Arthur the King,” which stars Mark Wahlberg as an adventure racer who befriends a stray dog on an endurance race through the Dominican Republic, opened in third place with $7.5 million.
The horror film “Imaginary” was fourth with $5.6 million Friday through Sunday in its second week in North American theaters.
Fifth place went to the biographical drama “Cabrini,” which tells the story of Catholic missionary Francesca Cabrini and her immigration to New York City in the late 19th century. It made $2.8 million in its second week.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Love Lies Bleeding” ($2.4 million), “Bob Marley: One Love” ($2.3 million), “One Life” ($1.7 million), “The American Society of Magical Negroes” ($1.2 million) and “Ordinary Angels” ($1 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $88.2 million. The year-to-date total is $1.325 billion — down 10% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore. (CNS)
