In a subtle yet intriguing eye emoji on X (formerly Twitter), signaling a hint of anticipation, Filipino singer-actress Maris Racal seems to be gearing up for her next big project for the third time with “Fan Girl” director Antoinette Jadaone and Filipino award-winning production ANIMA.

After clinching major wins for “On The Job 2: The Missing 8” in Venice and “Leonor Will Never Die” at Sundance, ANIMA is teaming up with Project 8 Projects to co-produce Jadaone’s latest venture, “Sunshine.”

But knowing Jadaone’s and ANIMA’s previous works, “Sunshine” isn’t just another film—it’s again a step towards shedding light on pressing societal issues through cinema.

Delving into the sensitive topic of teenage pregnancy, the story follows a young gymnast, portrayed by the “Can’t Buy Me Love” star, who confronts the harsh reality of impending motherhood amid her aspirations for the national team.

In the middle of her turmoil, she encounters a mysterious figure whose connection to her runs deeper than meets the eye, leading to unforeseen revelations that challenge her perceptions.

The acclaimed filmmaker behind hits like “That Thing Called Tadhana,” sees “Sunshine” as an opportunity to ignite much-needed conversations in a society where such topics are often shrouded in taboo.

“These topics have always been taboo in the Philippines because of our deeply conservative roots,” she shared with Deadline. “But when cases of teenage pregnancy and self-induced abortions rise every year, it is imperative that these stories be told.”

Bianca Balbuena of ANIMA echoed Jadaone’s sentiments, highlighting the studio’s commitment to supporting narratives that challenge societal norms.

Following successful collaborations on projects like “Fan Girl” and “Simula Sa Gitna,” ANIMA is proud to champion “Sunshine” as a testament to the enduring struggle for women’s autonomy over their bodies.
