San Diego County program to pair low-income seniors with spare bedrooms
Based on the latest data from the 2023 Point-in-Time Count, a concerning 29 percent increase in homelessness among adults aged 55 and older has been identified in San Diego County, with the oldest person surveyed being 81 years old.
Responding to this issue, the County Board of Supervisors has approved a new pilot program to address housing challenges faced by lower-income seniors.
According to the news release from County News Center, the two-year initiative seeks to establish connections between local seniors and homeowners willing to rent out spare bedrooms. The objective is to match at least 50 individuals, aged 55 and older, with suitable households that are open to offering spare bedrooms.
However, it’s important to note that the program is specifically tailored for seniors earning no more than 120 percent of the area median income. This ensures affordability by capping rent payments at 30 percent of the total monthly income.
To further ease financial burdens, the program also offers a service exchange option, allowing participants to contribute services in exchange for reduced rent. While this option is not mandatory, it provides flexibility for both seniors and hosting households.
Moreover, homes participating in the program must also be located within the county and maintain good standing with utility payments, taxes, and rent or mortgage obligations.
Eligible seniors will not have to worry because they will be carefully matched with participating households based on shared goals, preferences, and lifestyles.
The said program is anticipated to launch in early summer this year.
