What sets Michelle Hoy, a Filipino cake artist based in Hawaii, apart as a great baker? It’s her seamless juggling act between her full-time role as a baker and the responsibility of being a mother to her seven-year-old nonverbal autistic son.

But this time around, the cake artist for 11 years has set her sights on a grand culinary quest—the title of “The Greatest Baker.”

Hoy is currently a standout contender in the competition of the same title, hosted by esteemed pastry chef and TV personality Buddy Valastro as “The Cake Boss.”

Since its inception in December last year, the international competition has drawn over 18,000 participants, all vying for the title and the opportunity to meet the Cake Boss himself.

Undeterred by the contest’s popularity-centric nature, she has gracefully advanced through the quarterfinals, showcasing her culinary finesse.

In a Facebook post, she extends a plea for support: “To ensure my progression, I kindly request your assistance in garnering votes from yourself as well as those close to you on a daily basis throughout the upcoming 10-day period.”

As the competition unfolds, Hoy remains resolute in securing her place among the top bakers. The countdown is on, with voting for the semifinalists concluding on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. (PST).

The contest’s format ensures that only those with the most votes progress, heightening the anticipation as the grand finale approaches in February.

The coveted title isn’t the only prize at stake. The winner will find their story featured in Bake from Scratch magazine, providing an international stage to showcase their culinary artistry. Adding a delightful layer to the triumph is the top prize of $10,000.

“I will open a storefront again. Since I have to close my previous store due to the pandemic,” she said.
