A ‘Pinoymakase’ restaurant among OpenTable’s 7 most exciting restaurant debuts in Honolulu

“Pinoymakase” in Hawaii piques interest, doesn’t it? With this unique offering on their menu, a Filipino restaurant in Ward Village secures a spot among Honolulu’s seven most exciting restaurant debuts of 2023.

Peso Neighborhood distinguishes itself in a culinary scene marked by several newcomers, particularly through its modern Filipino-American offerings, a recognition emphasized by OpenTable, the online restaurant reservation service company.

According to the list, the Filipino-owned restaurant pays homage to the significant Filipino community that makes up 25 percent of Hawaii’s population, and added “Peso is where you come for playful twists on traditions.”

And rightfully so, its playful twists on traditional Filipino cooking have earned it the prestigious Ilima Award for Hawaii’s Best New Restaurant of 2023, just months after its grand opening last April.

Moreover, the restaurant’s pièce de résistance is the eight-course omakase experience, dubbed “Pinoymakase.” This features a collection of dishes, including kinilaw tostadas and wagyu beef cheek stew, showcasing their culinary prowess in blending and balancing flavors inspired by Southeast Asia with European techniques.

Despite a hint of foreign influences, the authentic Filipino taste still prevails at this spot. More Filipino dishes in their menu include lumpia, kinilaw, taho, ensaymada, pancit, and pinakbet. Special items like Moloka’i venison kaldereta, ube halaya French toast, and adobo French dip sandwiches add a contemporary spin.

Beyond dishes, Peso also offers an all-encompassing experience. From natural wines and craft cocktails to a selection of beers and acclaimed baked goods (including the Eater LA Best Cookie in Los Angeles), they ensure that every aspect of the dining experience is crafted with meticulous attention to detail.
