LOS ANGELES – American Airlines (AA) has entered a new codeshare partnership with Philippine Airlines (PAL), offering seamless connections between the Philippines and the United States.

The new codeshare covers AA’s routes to Los Angeles from seven US cities – Atlanta, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando and Washington, D.C.

Travelers can then continue their transpacific journey on PAL’s twice-daily flights from Los Angeles to Manila.

Additionally, the agreement applies to several PAL routes, including Tokyo to Manila and Cebu and Honolulu and Guam to Manila, American Airlines announced this week in a press release.

Travelers on any of these new codeshare flights will have both airlines ticketed on the same itinerary.

“We are excited to partner with Philippine Airlines, which will provide our customers seamless connections to Manila, the capital and economic hub of the region, and Cebu, said Anmol Bhargava, vice president of Global Alliances and Partnerships for American Airlines.

“The Philippines is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, and we look forward to continuing to enhance our partnership with Philippine Airlines.”

With the codeshare agreement allowing easier travel to the Philippines, tourism might just get a much-needed boost, said former Philippine tourism attache Manny Ilagan.

Ilagan, who now runs a Los Angeles-based travel agency, explains that codeshares allow an airline to sell seats on flights operated by other airlines.

“This means combining American and PAL flights to create a single itinerary to multiple destinations,” he said. “It makes booking, checking in and traveling more convenient for tourists.”

“This codeshare agreement essentially puts the Philippines much closer in reach,” he added.

PAL Chief Commercial Officer Eric David Anderson said the airline is eager to broaden its reach in the US market and create more opportunities for travelers to visit the Philippines.

“This partnership with American Airlines unlocks more options for customers traveling between Asia and the United States,” he said.

“We are delighted to deliver on our long-term strategy of continuing to build our global reach. We look forward to creating more opportunities for travelers to discover the wonders of the Philippines.”

The Philippines’ flag carrier operates twice-daily nonstop flights to Los Angeles, daily flights to San Francisco and multiple weekly flights to New York, Honolulu and Guam.

PAL’s network includes island-hopping flights to fabulous beach resort destinations, high-tech hubs and eco-tourism havens among the 7,641 islands of the Philippine archipelago.
