Fil-Am singers bring Pinoy Christmas spirit to the White House
WASHINGTON D.C. – The Outstanding Filipino Americans (TOFA) singers helped spread the “magic, wonder and joy” of the holidays at the White House on Sunday, performing Christmas carols – including the best-loved OPM songs.
The TOFA singers showcased Filipino talent at the East Room, bedecked with Christmas wreaths, lights and ornaments that add a sparkle to the White House holiday open house.
First lady Jill Biden unveiled the holiday decor recently and announced this season’s theme: “Magic, Wonder and Joy” of the holidays.
Leading the TOFA volunteer singers were Mark Anthony Atienza, on acoustic guitar, and belter Pongsky Tenioso.
TOFA founder Elton Lugay said he was “incredibly grateful” for the group’s triumphant return to the White House and the extraordinary opportunity for the singers to showcase original Pilipino music (OPM) and Filipino talent.
“For the second year in a row, they had the honor of spreading good tidings and cheer to visiting guests from around the country” Lugay said.
“This unique chance to share their talents in such a prestigious and meaningful setting was a testament to their hard work and dedication.”
In addition, the TOFA singers made history by performing OPM Christmas songs, adding a special touch that “undoubtedly brought joy and warmth” to the White House visitors, he said.
The singers delighted their audience for more than one hour. Following their performance, the group took a tour of the festively adorned White House, enjoying the decorations of the season.
Performing at the White House were Neeko Luna, Denise Kara, Ellis Young, Hannah Zapanta and Fatima Torrefranco, who serves in the US Navy.
TOFA lead vocalist Mark Atienza performs Ariel Rivera’s “Sana Ngayong Pasko” at the White House holiday open house.
Announcing the White House holiday open house, first lady Jill Biden said the theme was inspired by how children experience the holidays.
“Each room is designed to capture this pure, unfiltered delight and imagination — to see this season, this time of year through the wondrous, sparkling eyes of children,” Biden said.
The decor includes 98 Christmas trees, 72 classic wreaths and more than 140,000 holiday lights.
The decor celebrates the 200th anniversary of the classic tale “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” Biden said.
“In this season of reflection and goodwill, we hope you will embrace your inner child and delight in simply being present with those you love,” Biden added.
In the White House’s many rooms, visitors will find floating sweet treats, Santa Claus riding his sleigh and the 2023 White House gingerbread house.
