‘KathNiel’ spikes as top Google search in PH

On Nov. 30, it wasn’t just a commemoration of Andres Bonifacio’s day, but also a shocking pop culture event as this generation’s popular on-screen and real-life partners Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla called it quits after 11 years.

The revelation sent fans and netizens on a frenzied quest for information, as evidenced by the surge in Google searches in the country.

Google Trends recorded the highest level of interest in KathNiel over the past five years, with both actors reigning searches in the last week of November.

Padilla, in particular, garnered over 200,000 searches on Bonifacio Day, overshadowing even the searches for Philippine hero Andres Bonifacio and an NBA game between the Pistons and the Lakers, each receiving only 20,000 searches.

The KathNiel breakup had been building momentum in the weeks leading up to the announcement, with interest escalating after talent manager Ogie Diaz hinted at a potential split in early November. 

The data highlights the significant role of KathNiel in driving online searches, showcasing Filipinos’ inclination to turn to Google for the latest news, trending topics, and entertainment.

This revelation aligns with a broader trend in 2022, where 5 out of the top 10 overall trending Google searches in the country centered around lifestyle and entertainment. 

The KathNiel saga not only marks the end of an era but also underscores the evolving landscape of digital information consumption in the country.
