Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Guts’ might just be outselling ‘Sour.’ Here’s why
In a recent interview with PopBuzz, Olivia Rodrigo shared that her grandfather was “really big into astrology,” like doing charts for people. On the day of the songstress’ birth, he had claimed that his granddaughter would eventually become a performing artist and, as expected of Pisces folks, be “super emotional.”
Well, that reading has long been confirmed ever since the smash hit of Rodrigo’s debut album “Sour.” It topped the US Billboard 200, eventually turned into the longest-running debut album in the top 10 roster of the chart, and even bagged three Grammys.
It propelled the Gen Z pop artist to become a household name, and that’s why many doubted that Rodrigo would be able to top it. As to how society usually treats young female artists, naysayers have also been assuming that Rodrigo would just be a one-hit wonder. But less than a month since her new LP “Guts” was released, it looks like she’s already outdoing herself.

Sophomore effort “Guts” has already debuted at the top spot of the Billboard 200 chart, making it her second #1 album. Variety reports that it has already sold 302,000 albums in the US and streamed 100 million times, making it the “fourth largest opening week for any album in 2023,” besting the birth of “Sour” with 295,000 units.
More to expect from “Guts”
Apart from that, the whole “Guts” tracklist—with 12 songs, by the way—are gracing the Sept. 23-dated Billboard Hot 100’s top 40, with lead single “Vampire” fronting the pack. Sitting in seventh is “Bad Idea Right?” and coming in next is “Get Him Back!”—which she performed at the recent VMAs—wearing the #11 badge.
This achievement makes her the first artist to have all of the tracks from their two first albums hit the Hot 100’s top 40 lineup, as the whole “Sour” roster also charted in 2021.

X account Chart Data also confirms that the 20-year-old has unlocked another “first time” milestone: The current #1 single and album in the US are both her brainchildren.
