Fil-Am park ranger stabbed to death in Pomona, California

CLAREMONT, California — A California Polytechnic State University public safety officer, who was also a Claremont park ranger, was stabbed to death by an unidentified attacker, who was later shot dead by police.

Mark Manlapaz, 37, a Filipino American from Victorville, a senior park ranger in Claremont, was killed on the afternoon of June 29 when an unknown assailant stabbed him to death in his truck at Cal Poly Pomona campus, according to news reports.

Manlapaz’s still unidentified attacker was killed in an officer-involved shooting later that day. Law enforcement authorities are conducting an investigation.

Claremont Wilderness Park Human Services Director Anne Turner said Manlapaz was “incredibly loved and respected by his colleagues, and was an exceptional leader who really built relationships both with his colleagues and his community,” the Claremont Courier reported.

Manlapaz had been working as a Cal Poly public safety specialist for 17 years.

A community vigil in memory of Manlapaz took place Thursday, July 5 at 5 p.m. at Lewis Park.
