‘Welcome Kabayan’ greets newcomers to Regina, Saskatchewan

Musicians and dancers from the Filipino, Indian and Irish communities welcomed newcomers to Regina, Saskatchewan over the weekend with a celebration at RCMP Heritage Centre.

The second annual “Welcome Kabayan” was hosted by the Philippine Association of Saskatchewan.

“It’s a good way of welcoming different ethnic groups to our community and give them a chance to contribute,” painter Pepito Escanlar told CTV News.

Ritu Kalra of the Regina Immigration Women Centre says events like Welcome Kabayan need to happen more often as they make “newcomers feel welcome.”

When Glenda Obas Negula arrived in Canada from the Philippines 16 years ago, there was no welcoming event, she told CTV News.
