Ever wondered whether award-winning actress Dolly De Leon lets mean comments on the internet get to her? Well, you can now find out as she reads mean tweets for a challenge with her co-star Kathryn Bernardo ahead of the premiere of their film “A Very Good Girl” on Sept. 27.

Before diving into the tweets, the pair kicked off the video published on Star Cinema’s YouTube by revealing whether they’ve done the challenge before and how they usually handle hate comments.

“Nung first time I’ve done this, parang ok lang. Pero nung recent, mas nag-enjoy ako,” says Bernardo, who’s taken on the challenge for her own YouTube channel and a local publication feature. “Kasi na-enjoy nilang mang-bash satin. Might as well [i-enjoy] nating sagutin at basahin. Sayang naman effort nila.”

(The first time I did this, it was ok. But during the more recent one, I enjoyed it. Since they enjoyed bashing us, we might as well enjoy responding and reading them. We don’t want to let their efforts go to waste.)

“Ako nung una, sumasama pa loob ko eh. Umabot na nga sa point na gusto ko nang i-deactivate ’yung Twitter ko,” De Leon admits. “Pero sabi ko, ‘Bakit ko pa dinidibdib? Di naman nila ako kilala.’ Sige. Go. Natatawa na lang ako ngayon.”

(At first, I got upset over them. It actually got to a point where I wanted to deactivate my Twitter. But I told myself, ‘Why am I taking it so personally? They don’t even know me.’ Sure. Go ahead. Now, they just make me laugh.)

One of the first mean tweets De Leon read in the video claimed that her “Triangle of Sadness” performance wasn’t Best Supporting Actress award-worthy. To this, De Leon gamely replied, “In fair naman, di talaga ako nanalo ng Best Supporting Actress. Di nga ako na-nominate sa Oscars. So, magkakasundo kayo ng Academy.”

(In all fairness, I really didn’t win as Best Supporting Actress. I wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar. So, you’ll get along with the [Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences].)

The criticisms against Kathryn Bernardo, Dolly De Leon

Most of the mean comments against the pair criticized their acting prowess. One commenter even claims that Bernardo is reliant on her love team with her partner Daniel Padilla. In a number of tweets, people also belittled De Leon by calling her a bit player and extra “lang” (only).

Bernardo, who’s flying to South Korea to receive an award at the Seoul International Drama Awards on Sept. 21, says that she isn’t competing with Padilla and is happy for her partner.

For her part, De Leon told people not to look down on bit players and extras who take on roles because they love the craft. “Ingat-ingat lang tayo sa paggamit ng word na ‘lang,’” she says. (Be careful with using the word “just.”)

In the middle of the challenge, De Leon whips out her vape and even offers it to Bernardo. “Ay, nako. Baka ma-tweet na naman. Baka mag-trending na naman tayo. Later. Chos!” Bernardo replies, referencing her viral vape video. (Uh-oh. People might tweet about me again. I might trend on Twitter again. Later. Kidding!)

Later on, one of the tweets they read was written about the video, claiming it was part of Bernardo’s marketing strategy for their film.

To end the video, De Leon asked commenters to be more specific and constructive in their criticisms so actors can improve on them. “Criticism really helps. And at the end of the day, it’s night. Charot!” she says. “Do things with love and kindness.”
