You know what’s an understatement? Leaving your teenage home in the Philippines being a canon event. Before you even notice it, you’ve radically changed your routine, your daily habits, and even your sacred interests.

But while moving to a new place can transform you into a new person, the lingering power of nostalgia can be a tricky companion—suddenly, you’re fixating on your Facebook Memories for the nth time today.

When booking a spontaneous trip back home is not the most viable idea, here’s what you can count on when homesickness hits: virtual time machines. We’re talking about films from the past you probably grew up with (a.k.a. actively or passively consumed) and mirrored fun and simpler times.

In case you didn’t know, efforts have also been made to keep these pieces of cinema history immortalized for modern times. At the forefront of restoring and remastering these narratives is ABS-CBN’s Film Restoration team—and they have an interesting roster of restored films for our viewing pleasure.

Here are some handpicked titles of restored films to start with if you miss your teenhood in the Philippines, including the OG friendships, awkward phases, chaotic adventures, and unparalleled sense of curiosity.

“Labs Kita, Okey Ka Lang?”

Dir. Jerry Lopez Sineneng

Everyone and their mother and childhood friends-to-lovers trope loyalists know that specific confrontation scene all too well. But that’s not enough to explain the allure of this classic rom-com. Shot at the University of the Philippines Baguio, we follow the complex adventures of the inseparable duo Bujoy and Ned. Despite knowing each other like the back of their hand, their friendship gets challenged when Bujoy, a clay sculpture enthusiast, realizes her feelings for aspiring musician Ned, who pursues a different girl. Now, where do we go from here?

(Bonus: They also serve looks in this film. I mean, I expected nothing less from butterfly clips ambassador Jolina Magdangal.)

“Magic Temple”

Dir. Peque Gallaga

Those who’ve watched this fantasy-adventure film probably have top-notch imagination by now. Three main boys Jubal, Sambag, and Omar find themselves in the Magic Temple and take on the challenge of fighting against Ravenal’s evil forces. Convincing world-building? Check. Visual effects? Commendable for a work released in the ’90s. Costumes? I want them. This film, which raked in tons of awards at the 1996 Metro Manila Film Festival, can be a tearjerker, too.

“Magandang Hatinggabi”

Dir. Laurenti Dyogi

Racking your brains for your next movie marathon pick? Your dilemma is over. This movie (which stars Angelica Panganiban’s little girl version) brings us to the middle of a teenage group’s mysterious road trip. Suddenly, they get stuck in an unfortunate event. TBH, it’s best to go into this tale sans context—just make sure your neighbor won’t mind the panic-induced screams.

“Flames: The Movie”

Dir. Khryss Adalia, Jerry Lopez Sineneng

Yup, the title’s origins (which is a name game between you and your crush) suggest the vibe of this teen-oriented-series-turned-movie. We witness romance in different faces and intensities taking the front seat, and various teenagers (portrayed by ’90s Filipino icons) navigate their growing pains, confusing emotions, and complex family lives.

(Also, you’d understand why those Rico Yan fancams still appear on your TikTok’s For You Page every now and then.)

“Gimik: The Reunion”

Dir. Laurenti Dyogi

The word “reunion” can either make you excited or dreadful, but it’s always… interesting. If your headspace is ready for some heavy stuff, consider hopping into this college friend group’s multilayered world. How much have you changed a year after graduation? Is adulthood really that harsh? Can your friendship keep up with the fast-paced changes shoved down your throat? Let’s try to answer that with this story.
