Up-and-coming Fil-Canadian artists showcase heritage-themed works
Several Filipino Canadian artists’ works reflecting their heritage are on exhibit in downtown Calgary, Alberta.
The exhibit, “Malaya,” opened June 1, to celebrate Filipino Heritage Month and the 125th year of Philippine independence, hosted by the Philippine Consulate until June 30.
On exhibit are more than 20 art pieces of six artists, namely, Day Pajarillo, Audere Santos, Thea Galang, Ryle Ramirez, Gladzy Kei, and the three-year-old Filipinx Kasaganaan Artist Collective of Calgary.

“I’ve always felt so disconnected with my Filipino heritage. But since I was accepted here, it just cements the fact that I should be proud of who I am,” Thea Galang, 17, told CBC News. The youngest among the exhibitors, she includes batok tattoos in her works.
Philippines Consul General Zaldy Patron thanked the artists for expressing art in the Filipino context, giving the Canadian public a deeper look at Filipino culture.
