How did people react to the Blackpink member in The Idol?

The first episode features Jennie Kim as backup dancer Dyanne, wearing a loose, slightly ripped midriff, a black sports bra, and high-wasted booty shorts.

She poses, grinds, struts, pops, locks, and drops. Later, the aspiring idol Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp, wipes her tears after failing to match Dyanne’s unbeatable stage presence.

Netizens started sharing the clip online, causing more folks to comment on the provocative scene. Some of them praised it, while others felt disappointed.

One person said on Twitter, “Jennie Kim slayed in the first episode of The Idol! Her talent and charisma are undeniable. I honestly cannot deal with how good the first episode of The Idol was. Miss Jennie Kim, you are a Goddess.”

Another wrote, “ The fact that all of this probably came truly easy to Jennie because not only has it been her job for years now but also from all her training. She IS the idol.”

A TikTok account with the handle @dfjenn posted numerous “fancam” videos of almost every scene where the Blackpink singer appears. Each clip gained thousands of views.

The New York Times shared the account holder’s statement, 18-year-old Anisa from Seattle. She said, “I would completely stop watching it and end my subscription with HBO Max.”

Others expressed disgust for the series pilot. One of them wrote, “Eww disgusting such pervert behavior.” Also, another said, “What is Jennie even doing in The Idol, like baby girl you’re the Jennie Kim. You deserve a main role in a good series.”

What is The Idol series about?

The Idol revolves around the cutthroat music industry in Hollywood. It stars Lily Rose-Depp as a rising pop star entangled in a complex relationship with a self-help-guru and cult leader.

Renowned artist The Weeknd plays the latter role. Also, it has Blackpink artist Jennie Kim playing backup dancer Dyanne. She told the Korean news outlet Yonhap, “I found the script very intriguing, so I wanted to be part of the series.”

The show features other artists like Nico Hiraga, Elizabeth Berkley, Troye Sivan, Tyson Ritter, Debbie Ryan, Hari Nef, and Rachel Sennott.

Sam Levinson helms this provocative new HBO Max series, promoting it as the “sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.” Believe it or not, the show became controversial before it aired.

Last month, reports surfaced regarding alleged toxicity and clashes among staff. However, HBO denied these allegations. The network also claimed it made changes to meet standards.

The company defended its commitment to producing high-quality entertainment. “We know that we’re making a show that’s provocative. It’s not lost on us,” Levinson said.
