Parents surprised by cutback of SF school’s Filipino language classes
Changes to the Bessie Carmichael School’s Filipino language and culture program have surprised many families and community advocates.
Bessie Carmichael School PreK-8 Filipino Education Center administrators have decided to merge the 4th and 5th grade Filipino language classes in the 2023-24 school year due to financial difficulties and declining enrollment, reported the San Francisco Examiner.

While the K-5 Filipino language program has helped hundreds of students acquire self-esteem and pride in their culture, the program has faced numerous challenges.
Some parents have pushed back on what they considered decision-making without significant consultations with parents, students and FEC staff.
