He has a massive following of fans who are always eager to get their hands on anything related to their favorite actor. So, when news broke that a piece of his chewed gum was up for sale, it caused quite a stir.

The Story of the Chewed Gum

Per the advertisement, the vendor was present when Jon Favreau, the actor/producer and director of “Iron Man,” was bestowed with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The star of the movie franchise, Robert Downey Jr., was also present and added a memorable moment to the event.

He took a piece of gum from his mouth and stuck it on the newly revealed star of Favreau, stating humorously that he was doing it to “officially” mark the occasion.

The seller listed the item as “Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Chewed Gum.”  It came with a certificate of authenticity. The seller described it as in “near-mint condition.”

As stated in the eBay listing, the plastic container containing the chewed gum will be sent to the highest bidder and is not returnable.

The seller acquired the gum from the Hollywood Walk of Fame event, where actor and producer Jon Favreau were recognized, and Robert Downey Jr. placed his gum on the star.

The seller assures the potential buyers that the gum is in the same condition as when the seller obtained it, and they can verify it for Downey Jr.’s DNA.

While paying $40,000 for a piece of chewed gum might seem absurd to some, it’s not unusual for celebrity memorabilia to fetch high prices at auction.

Items like clothing, props, and even hair have all been sold for significant sums. Just last year, a lock of Ludwig van Beethoven’s hair sold for over $28,000.

Not everyone fancies the idea of selling someone’s chewed gum. Critics have argued that it’s a strange, unhygienic practice and not worth the money.

Others have pointed out that our society places a high value on celebrity culture, even when it comes to something as insignificant as gum.

What New Projects Can We Expect from Robert Downey Jr.?

Steven Knight will write the screenplay. He is the showrunner for “Peaky Blinders.” In addition, Downey Jr. will star in the upcoming HBO series “The Sympathizer.” It was based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
