Why Paris Hilton’s Surrogate Had to Watch ‘The Simple Life’

/ 11:25 PM March 15, 2023

Paris Hilton, 41, mentioned that she and her fiancé, Carter Reum, had their first child through surrogacy. And, as it turns out, the surrogate had to watch “The Simple Life” as part of her contract.

The reality star revealed that one reason for opting for surrogacy to have her baby, Phoenix, was her previous experience witnessing childbirth, which discouraged her from going through it herself.

“In ‘The Simple Life,’ I was in a room while a woman gave birth, and that disturbed me,” she said, adding that even if she were 20, she would still have a baby with the help of a surrogate.

Another reason is that she was “scared.” “I want a family,” she told Glamour UK. “It’s just doing it physically. I’m just so scared. Death and childbirth are two things that scare me above anything else in the world.”

Why the Surrogate Had to Watch Her Old Show

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Hilton, who kept the birth of her baby a secret for a week, revealed that her surrogate would play episodes of her 2003 reality show for the baby so that he could hear his mother’s voice.

The American Pregnancy Association notes that unborn babies can hear sounds outside the body around 27 to 29 weeks pregnant. They may even recognize certain voices and sounds with repetition.

Hilton having her surrogate watch her show may sound weird, but it’s an excellent way to expose her unborn child to the sound of her voice.

It seemed to have paid off as Hilton said on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show that her song, “Stars Are Blind,” is her son’s “favorite lullaby.”

Upon being informed that her surrogate would deliver the baby a week and a half earlier than expected, Hilton disguised herself with a brunette wig to secretly enter the hospital.

Paris Hilton shared with Rolling Stone that she wanted to keep the intimate moment of witnessing the birth solely between herself and her husband.

“It was just like, ‘Oh my God. I’m a mom,'” Hilton spoke to the magazine about the life-changing experience and why she wanted to cherish it privately.

Their new baby’s secrecy

“My life has just been so public, and my whole life has been invaded. I felt for my baby. I just wanted him to come into the world and be here,” she said.

Hilton kept her baby a secret from Kathy, her mother. She told Rolling Stone that she spilled the news while she gave the matriarch a blue Chanel bag.

The socialite hoped the gift might help make up for keeping mum about the baby. “I thought if I give her Chanel first, perhaps she won’t be so upset that I didn’t tell her about this,” she said.

“I held the baby on my shoulder with a blanket over him and then sat down. She’s like, ‘What is that?’ And I was like, ‘A baby… meet your grandson,'” she told the Glossy.

Paris Hilton recently starred in an episode of ‘The View,’ revealing one way her life has changed since becoming a mom.

“It’s just been… I feel like a different person. I’m just so in love with him, and he fills my heart with so much love, and I feel like my life is finally complete.”

But why would a surrogate have to watch a reality show from over a decade ago? The answer lies in the legal obligations that come with surrogacy.

How Surrogacy Works

When a couple uses a surrogate to carry their child, they typically work with an agency that helps to facilitate the process.

The agency finds and screens potential surrogates and coordinates medical care. It also handles the legal and financial aspects of the arrangement.

As part of the legal contract between the surrogate and the intended parents, there are often stipulations regarding lifestyle and behavior.

They put these stipulations in place to ensure that the surrogate is taking proper care of herself and the baby she is carrying, They also ensure that there are no risks to the pregnancy.

For Paris Hilton’s surrogate, watching “The Simple Life” was likely part of a more significant agreement. It required her to avoid certain lifestyle choices that could be detrimental to the pregnancy.

It’s common for surrogacy contracts to include diet, exercise, and even social media usage guidelines.
