Steve Davis: The Top Contender for Twitter’s CEO Position?

/ 12:50 PM March 05, 2023

Steve Davis, one of the first hires at SpaceX and currently CEO of Elon Musk’s transport company, The Boring Company, has been rumored to succeed Musk as the CEO of Twitter.

Last month, Elon Musk announced that Twitter would have a new CEO by the year’s end.

He said, “I need to stabilize the company and ensure it’s healthy and that the product roadmap is laid out… I think it should be stable around the end of this year.”

Although there has been no update since then, a recent report suggests that Steve Davis, a long-time associate of Musk, could be the chosen candidate.

Why Steve Davis is the top choice

Davis, also Twitter’s Chief Growth Officer, has been with the company since 2010 and has played a significant role in its growth and success.

He has led Twitter’s global business and revenue operations, overseeing its ad products and driving its international expansion efforts.

But it’s not just Davis’s impressive resume that makes him a top contender for the CEO position. The company has recognized him for his leadership skills and ability to navigate complex challenges with a level head and strategic thinking.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Twitter co-founder Evan Williams praised Davis as “a really strong leader” and “one of the most capable people I’ve worked with.”

Perhaps most importantly, Davis deeply understands Twitter’s culture and values. He has been with the company through its highs and lows.

Davis also demonstrated a commitment to the platform’s mission of fostering public conversation and connecting people worldwide.

According to Bloomberg, a well-known account of an impressive engineering accomplishment is from Mr. Davis. Musk tasked him with producing a component that typically costs $120,000 but with a budget of only $5,000.

After dedicating several months to the task, he devised a method for fabricating the component for just $3,900. That would not be the first time Davis has implicated efforts to reduce costs.

Steve Davis’ Work Ethics

According to The Information, Musk appointed him to lead a $500 million cost-cutting initiative, resulting in almost $1 billion in reductions achieved through terminating contracts with external vendors and negotiating revised terms with existing ones.

A former SpaceX colleague who spoke to Bloomberg said Davis is well-known for his tireless work ethic. He routinely devoted 16 hours daily to his daily responsibilities for several years.

During his tenure at SpaceX, Mr. Davis ventured into a side project by launching a yogurt shop named Mr. Yogato.

Subsequently, he established a bar called Thomas Foolery. It gained distinction as one of the earliest dining establishments in Washington to embrace bitcoin payments.

However, Thomas Foolery shuttered in 2015, and last year Davis sold Mr. Yogato for $1, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Despite much conjecture that Musk would choose a confidant for the post (given his tendency to solicit friends and former associates for high-profile roles), no concrete names had surfaced until this week.

Are there any others for the position?

Of course, Twitter is also considering other candidates for the CEO position. Moreover, the decision ultimately rests with its board of directors.

But many experts believe that Davis is a strong contender. His success and leadership track record make him a compelling choice for the role.

In the past, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX has been relatively tight-lipped about the qualities he seeks in a potential leader.

He initially revealed his intention to resign from the CEO position on December 21. Mr. Musk stated that he would focus solely on software and server engineering once he had found a suitable replacement.

Musk even described the replacement as “someone foolish enough” to take his place. Steve Davis is the top contender for this challenging but essential role for many observers. Only time will tell if Twitter will select him for the position.
