/ 09:27 AM February 28, 2023

If you’re a big fan of horror films, there’s a new horror movie, so gruesome people are dashing out of cinema halls to throw up.

The Outwaters is a horror movie released on February 9, and lots of viewers have described the film as disturbing. These reactions might be good; that is what horror films aim to achieve.

Some viewers have even reported getting continuous from their smartwatches over spiked heart rates and induced anxiety spells during the movie’s runtime.

About the Movie

The movie synopsis states, “a trip to the Mojave Desert goes creepy when a group of campers experiences unexplained sounds and vibrations, and strange animal behavior.”

“Then, everything changes one night, sending the foursome on a mind-bending trip through terror.”

Even though the movie was only released recently, critics have raved about it, and it has gotten an impressive score of 71% rotten on the acclaimed critic site “Rotten Tomatoes.”

Robbie Banfitch directed the movie, and, like other classic horror films, including The Blair Witch Project, it was made using found footage.

Thoughts From Some Viewers

Some viewers, however, are not entirely pleased, complaining about the sickening and gruesome nature of the film, though some strongly believe that is what horror movies are all about.

Noel Murray from the LA Times wrote about the movie: “Some may find it tedious or confusing, but there’s admirable integrity to Banfitch’s approach.”

He added, “The movie genuinely feels like a first-person perspective on the end of the world. Just don’t forget your anti-nausea tablets if you plan to watch the movie.”

Viewers have taken to social media to express their thoughts on the movie, with one user saying, “The Outwaters is the first film to give me nightmares since childhood,” while another added that they’re still “processing” the movie.

Meanwhile, another user confessed, “The sound made me so oddly dizzy that I had to leave the theater to vomit. I had never experienced this before.”

Other reactions from viewers

“It is more disturbing than scary. If that makes any sense,” added another. “Wow… [The Outwaters] stunned me such that the heart monitor in my Apple Watch kept going off for a high heart rate. The film is a mind trip and downward spiral into hell.”

But this was not an uncommon experience. Another viewer shared a photo he took of his smartwatch and what the movie did to his heart.

The person wrote, “I’d say tonight was pretty damn eventful! [Robbie Banfitch] you’re amazing and hilarious, and watching this film [The Outwaters] again has solidified my opinion that this has one of the most horrific and traumatizing sequences I’ve ever experienced in a found footage horror film [sic].”

As if that wasn’t bad enough, another user explained how the movie caused them severe anxiety.

They wrote, “The unending shrill darkness of the second half gave me the worst in-theater anxiety I’ve had in years. Don’t want to see this again if I can help it for a few months, if ever.”

Meanwhile, some viewers applauded the film, describing it as “another big win for horror movies.”
