17-Year-Old Set to Direct A24 Horror Film Based on ‘The Backrooms’ YouTube Craze
For some high schoolers, summer jobs can be quite fun. Take for instance Kane Parsons, the 17-year-old who is set to create a horror film The Backrooms during his summer break.
Kane Parsons is the creator of the YouTube series, The Backrooms. It became viral in 2022 under the name Kane Pixels which was then revealed as an alias for Parsons.
The young content creator uploaded a nine-minute video clip of people investigating creepy empty spaces. It gained popularity due to online users’ fascination with uncanny places.

These liminal spaces are areas that exist next to our real world without being a part of our reality. In short, they are on the other dimension. The first video received immense positive reviews.
Viewers are hooked by the thrilling ambiance and special VFX tricks and effects of The Backrooms. Currently, the YouTube video has more than 44 million views. It won’t be surprising viewers are looking forward to the film adaptation.
The Backrooms movie
Move over Slender Man. Producers and directors have already confirmed the making of The Backrooms movie. A24, 21 Laps Entertainment, Chernin Entertainment, and Atomic Monster will direct the film adaptation.
Roberto Patino, the “DMZ” creator will write the film and will also be the executive producer of the project. Production will start on Parson’s summer break. However, there is no release date yet and plot hints as of this writing.

Furthermore, Parsons uploaded a total of 15 videos for “The Backrooms” last year. The series added a more aligning narrative story to associate with the first video that Parsons found.
Overall, the videos have garnered more than 100 million views. It is still building up additional Internet followers who want to explore the mythology of The Backrooms.
According to a report from Indiewire, this will be the latest movie adaptation of viral and horror internet stories. Director Sylvain White’s movie “Slender Man” also came from the trending creepypasta before its theater release.
In addition, Dan Cohen, Shawn Levy of “Stranger Things”, and Dan Levine will be producing for 21 Laps Entertainment together with Michael Clear, Alayna Glasthal, and Judson Scott for Atomic Monster. A press release also confirmed that Parsons “will direct the film over his Summer vacation.”
