Homebuyers Flee CA Cities Except Sacramento
Homebuyers have been moving in droves away from California cities for several years. Yet, one city continues to attract new residents: Sacramento.
The city of Sacramento dominated nearly 25% of the property search queries on real estate brokerage Redfin.
Yet, over 41,000 California residents have been looking for homes on that website to live elsewhere. What makes Sacramento a prime homebuyer destination?
Why people move to Sacramento, CA
The cost of living is why most people look for new homes in the region. According to UpHomes, Sacramento’s CoL is 21% higher than the national average.
Yet, it is relatively more affordable than other Californian cities. For example, Los Angelos is 46.6% more expensive than Sacramento.
Also, its average home price is lower than other cities in the Bay Area. The median home price in San Francisco is $1.2 million, while Sacramento’s is only $430,000.
Bernadette Austin, the Executive Director at the UC Davis for Regional Change, told ABC10 the reason why people move to the region:
She said, “One of the reasons people do move to this area is because we have growing neighborhoods.”
In other words, Sacramento has wide stretches of land for new homes. For example, El Dorado Hills and Folsom are forming mega-regions with numerous houses under construction.
Another reason Sacramento is becoming an attractive place to live in the remote work trend. People may work from home instead of moving somewhere near their offices.
As a result, they have more flexibility in choosing their homes. Workers could choose more affordable properties in other regions like Sacramento.
People are also moving to that area because of politics. Austin explained that liberal voters are moving to places near the coast like Silicon.
On the other hand, conservatives are moving inland. A couple told ABC 10, “The cost of living is low, the taxes are low, and you have so many more freedoms as an American.”
Conclusion
Numerous phenomena like COVID’s aftermath, rising inflation, and expanding remote work options cause many people to move to Sacramento.
