/ 08:55 AM January 30, 2023

California was drenched in rainfall last Fall, which is positive news after experiencing one year of drastic drought. Although some areas have suffered from heavy rainfall, this occurrence can bring out one of nature’s beauties, California superblooms.

California had its first superbloom in 2017 which is almost a decade now. Following that year, in 2019, only specific Califonia superbloom locations experienced the wildflowers spread out in valleys and mountaintops.

Constant rains and warm temperatures after caused the dormant seeds on the desert floor to pop out in 2019. It brought the marvelous display of the California superbloom.

What is a California Superbloom?

A superbloom is a unique desert botanical occurrence in California where an unusual growth of wildflowers laying dormant underground all blossom simultaneously. This phenomenon results in a marvelous display of colors and botanical life.

Moreover, this rare phenomenon only happens with the right amount of rain during the year. Dry weather should follow after to heat the soil enough, and also good cloud at night for covering. California Super bloom is also possible if there are no harsh winds that can damage the seeds.

Where is the Superbloom in California?

More often than not, the best California superbloom locations are its state parks. If you are looking for a spectacular display of wildflowers, visit Mojave, Lake Elsinore, Antelope Valley, Death Valley, and Anza Borrego.

They are the top places to witness gorgeous floral blankets. If you’re planning to take a trip to these natural wonders, check out the state park websites for details on responsible visits.

Moreover, walking the trails is the best way to see the poppies. One of the good things is these trails are wheelchair-accessible too.

When can you see Superbloom?

Knowing the exact dates of the California superbloom is almost impossible. The blooming season usually occurs from mid-February until June. Flower buds start out popping at the start of Spring.

On rare occasions, superblooms can start early like how the winter blooms grew at the Anza Borrego dessert, according to a report by Secret Los Angeles. However, this natural wonder doesn’t happen yearly. It usually takes a decade for the right factors to align.

Unfortunately, climate change that causes extreme weather conditions majorly affects the occurrence of superblooms. Long drought after one year’s worth of rainfall destroys the growing blooms. It could have also washed away the potential living seeds.
