The mother of a 29-year-old Filipino who was shot and killed by police officers in Maui, Hawaii said her son was having a mental crises and “didn’t deserve to die.”

Leodelfa Antallan said her son, Reynaldo Ricarde, 29, suffered from mental health issues and was suicidal.

Police responded to a call from their home in Kahului Thursday evening, Dec. 29, as Ricarde was having a mental health crisis.

According to a Maui police spokesperson, a responding police officer, who was not named, encountered Ricarde who was holding a weapon over his head. Ricarde allegedly advanced and the officer fired his weapon.

The officer reportedly tried to apply life-saving measures on Ricarde who later died at Maui Memorial Medical Center. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
