Princess Diaries 3: The royalties of Genovia are back

/ 09:31 AM November 17, 2022

We want to keep you in the loop, so what’s new? “Princess Diaries 3” is in the works at Disney. Yes, pack your bags and hop on to your next flight to the kingdom of Genovia. After an almost  20-year-hiatus, another sequel is coming out, and fans are freaking out.

The original Princess Diaries movie in 2001 starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews was from the novel by Meg Cabot. It revolves around the story of a simple high school girl named Mia Thermopolis. After learning that she wasn’t just a normal girl but an heir to the Genovian throne, her life changed.

On November 15, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that a new Princess Diaries movie is officially in the works at Disney. Fans have been waiting for the franchise’s return, especially when rumors are circulating about the film’s comeback. In 2016,  Garry Marshall, the director of the first film and its sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, talked about the possibility of a third film.

However, plans for the next sequel halted when Marshall died later that year. After a few years, discussions about the return of the movie started again. In 2019, during a TV appearance, Anne Hathaway revealed that there is a script for the third installment.

Anne Hathaway said, “I want to do it, Julie [Andrews] wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all want it to happen; it’s just we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it.”

But it’s surprising to know, as per sources, that Hathaway doesn’t have a deal yet to star in Princess Diaries 3. Don’t fret just yet, as we have a hunch the Oscar winner will soon enter the casting. Last month, she was asked about the project, and she said, I would more than entertain it. I’m pulling for it.”

Furthermore, it’s still uncertain if Julie Andrews will return to her role as Queen Clarisse. On June 8, she told The Hollywood Reporter that she thinks “it would be too late to do it now. It’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”

Then come June 9, Andrews told Entertainment Tonight that she doesn’t know yet if she will return.  “It depends what the story is, and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful, but if not, there will be other things.”

While fans are holding on to their seats with crossed fingers, the third movie is surely coming. According to The Hollywood Reporter sources, it will be a continuation of the series, not a reboot. In addition, Aadrita Mukerji will write the screenplay. She is the brain behind the writings of Reacher, Supergirl, Scorpion, and some episodes of New Girl.

Furthermore, talks about the release date were also still uncertain. It’s too early to know, but there’s no confirmation yet about the release of The Princess Diaries 3.
