Daily Malong’s new collection to be in NY Fashion Week ‘22

/ 11:34 AM August 18, 2022

A royalty-inspired collection by Daily Malong will be at the New York Fashion Week for the second time following its Fashion Week debut last year.

Daily Malong champions Filipino indigenous weaving through intentional pieces. With the overarching theme of “Royalty Is Indigenous,” the collection and embodies traditional weaving and designs rooted in pre-colonial Philippines.

The new collection flaunts intricate handwoven artisan pieces imagined by pre-colonial tribal leaders, master artists, shamans and other important figures in communities called barangay or balangay. The vibrant prints and designs represent the strength, solidarity, tradition and the true regal spirit of the culture.

Daily Malong focuses on indigeneity instead of the more common Manila-centric and post-colonial narrative, melding handwoven fabrics with powerful silhouettes and strobes of colors into modern ensembles. The pieces can be casual or formal wear, high-fashion, sustainable and slow fashion.

Daily Malong Creative Director Lydia Querian recognizes the diaspora’s need for cultural identity as well as indigenous Filipinos’ need to keep traditions alive. As a social enterprise, Daily Malong provides the North American market with fashionable clothing pieces that use artisan textiles and materials while providing livelihood to indigenous communities in the Philippines through an ethical supply chain.

“Bringing indigenous weaving practices to the future perpetuates time-tested traditions, helping the present and protecting the future,” said Querian. “Each indigenous textile worn today helps wearers and weavers navigate societal atrocities, prevent climate change, and restore a more sustainable environment.”
