This 2018, start small
Start small — that’s the best way to begin the new year. With so many things you would like to do, it’s possible to be overwhelmed. So why not just take baby steps and carry out the basics first? Then when you finally get the hang of it, take it to the next level.
If you want to travel the world, start on small adventures to places that are within your turf? If you live in the countryside but work in the big city, you can either travel back home on a weekend and re-discover your hometown, or simply go out of town to destinations that are only 1-2 hours’ drive away. While planning a trip would require booking airfares and travel insurance, accommodation, tours and other holiday travel-related needs, a quick road trip is also a good option for a travel goal.
Stick to a healthy and fit lifestyle
This is one of the most challenging goals of almost all New Year’s resolutions list. After all the feasting (plus the bed weather) brought about by the holiday season it can be quite difficult to commit to routines. But instead of trying to lose certain pounds before summer or spring, consider small practical goals that will eventually turn into a habit. Drink more water, lessen alcohol intake, walk more, get more sleep (whenever you can), take breaks in between work hours, meditate more, replace your refined sugar desserts with fruits, and the list goes on. These small resolutions will play a big role in achieving easier and more manageable long-term goals for a healthy and fit lifestyle.
Read and learn more
People say, “Make time for things you love doing.” Yes, you enjoy reading and want to increase your literary knowledge and skills but sometimes you cannot even finish a book. Why? It could be getting caught up in a lot of things, or your eyes are too tired from all the day’s work to continue a book. How about listening to audio books instead? This way you can also multi-task. But since there are pros and cons to both reading and listening, the latter is only an option when it’s really quite impossible to finish your book (but badly want to). Learning a new language would also require a lot of time from your hectic schedule, but constant practice on the basics — the alphabet, numbers and commonly used phrases — is a great way to start.
Improving oneself doesn’t need a long list of do’s and don’ts or goals. Whether or not it’s the New Year, every day is an opportunity to make things better or start something new. Remember that the choice to grow must come from within. Resolutions alone won’t make you a better person but instead, your dedication and open-mindedness will keep you on the right track.
