Surplus Alaskan ferry may end up in Cebu

The Alaskan ferry Taku may end up serving in Cebu.

JUNEAU – The sale of a surplus Alaskan ferry, Taku, fell through and it won’t become a Portland hotel after all. Instead, with a new winning bidder, it may end up in an Asian scrapyard, or serve as a ferry in Cebu.

A spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Facilities, said the new winning bid is $171,000 from Jabal Al Lawz Trading Est. of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

A Jabal Al Lawz Trading Est. spokesman told Juneau Empire that their winning the auction “would be fantastic news, as we have a new life planned for her in the Cebu Islands.”
