SF Asian Art Museum to embark on $90M expansion
SAN FRANCISCO — The Asian Art Museum is investing $90 million in its future to transform the visitor experience of its world-renowned collection, exhibitions and cultural programs.
In early 2018, construction will begin on the centerpiece of this transformation: a new, 13,000-square-foot exhibition Pavilion and Art Terrace added to the east side of the museum’s Civic Center home. The museum will remain open during the expansion.
Designed by architect Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY, the project will allow the museum to:
- Present multiple special exhibitions at the same time—so there’s always something new to see or do.
- Nurture conversation between our historic collection and cutting-edge contemporary art.
- Operate more flexible areas for impactful cultural and community programs.
- Connect with visitors personally through multilayered art encounters and dynamic digital tools.
- Materially enhance the pedestrian experience along busy Hyde Street.
The result will be one of the nation’s premier venues dedicated to Asian art.
