Book reading, signing for ‘The Filipinos of Koloa’
KAUAI, Hawaii — Catherine Pascual Lo, author of The Filipinos of Koloa, is doing a hana hou event on Saturday, September 16, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Koloa School.
Lo will have a talk story/book-signing and raise funds for a second check of $1,000 for the Kauai Philippine Cultural Center, “A Place for All” cultures now under construction in Puhi, hat day.
“The Filipinos of Koloa,” released in May 2017, had its beginnings in July 1985, initially written in conjunction with the Koloa Plantation Sesquicentennial Celebration.
Updated, it highlights Filipino participation in the Koloa Plantation experience from 1910 to 1996, and spotlights some achievements of the descendants of the Sakadas — Filipino contract laborers.
The book also includes the history of Koloa Plantation, the major ethnic groups who made Koloa Plantation a success story, the Koloa Plantation camps — especially New Mill Camp — life in plantation days and details of the Koloa Plantation Sesquicentennial Celebration, including pictures of the first Koloa Plantation Days Parade on July 27, 1985 — 32 years ago.
