PH Science High team nabs 2nd place at int’l clean tech competition in NY

STONY BROOK, New York – A team from the Philippine Science High School (Main Campus) grabbed second place in an international clean technology student competition held on July 14 at Stony Brook University.

Teammates Philippe Bungabong, Justine Opulencia and Maded Batara III won the honor at the 2017 Clean Tech Challenge for their project, “Development of an Integrated Online System for the Regulation of Household Electricity Consumption.”

The project was one of 10 finalists selected from 330 entries submitted by teams of over 700 students from 26 countries.

An earlier version of the same project garnered the prize as the Most Innovative Research Project at the International Student Science Fair in Korea held in June.

Advisers Joaquin Almirante and Ralph Hipolito accompanied the team.

The Clean Tech Competition is a unique, worldwide research and design challenge for pre-college youth. The program encourages scientific understanding of real-world issues and the integration of environmentally responsible energy sources.

Each year, the Clean Tech Competition addresses an issue that is grounded in core technological competency areas and focuses on the next great engineering challenges.

The competition is designed to foster a deeper understanding of STEM- (science, technology, engineering, and math) related concepts, recognize outstanding talent and prepare the next generation of globally competitive innovators.
