VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia — Two young Filipina students were nearly killed in a terrible crash caused by a suspected drunk driver.

Veronica Cabal and Michaela Pavico came to the United States in March 2017 to work in hotels as international students.

On Mother’s Day, May 14 both were hit by a car driven by Andrea Dejesus (not a Filipino). Andrea Dejesus was arrested for a DUI and two counts of maiming.

The records state an officer was in the process of pulling over a car when he saw “a person laying in the road and the 2002 Nissan dragging a bicycle.”

Dejesus’ blood alcohol was allegedly .26 and that she was going 10 miles over the speed limit.

Cabal suffered brain injuries. She and Pavico are now bound to wheelchairs and have a long road to recovery requiring physical therapy.

The Filipino community in Virginia Beach is helping the two women and their families with a place to live. Supporters are also raising funds to help pay for their medical bills and tickets back home.
