A Filipino American teenage girl was killed in a car crash in the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday morning, May 14, as she and her mother were on their way home from senior prom.

At around 2:30 a.m., 18-year-old Shane Alexis Marcelino of Fremont, California, was riding in the passenger’s seat of black Toyota Yaris driven by her mother, Maria. Just a few blocks from the Marcelinos’ home, the Yaris attempted to make a left-hand turn, when it collided with a blue Chevy Malibu traveling in the opposite direction, according to various reports.

Marcelino was pronounced dead at the scene, while Maria, 39, was rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of the Malibu, who are in their 20s, also suffered minor injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals.

The Fil-Am teen was an honor student at James Logan High School and would have graduated in June. She played the flute in the school band and was involved with the youth ministry program at her church according to CBS News.

According to the school’s newspaper, she was “beloved by her classmates and was always a source of happiness and support for the people around her.”

“She was a wonderful young lady,” John Mattos, a spokesman for the New Haven Unified School District, told NBC Bay Area. “She was in band and got great grades taking AP and college prep classes, and students really liked her.”

No arrests have been made, local police said. Investigators are looking into whether alcohol or speeding played a role in the fatal collision.

“It looks like they were traveling at a pretty good rate of speed,” Fremont Fire Department Battalion Chief Richard Dickinson said, adding that “it was heavy impact. Major damage.”

A GoFundMe page has been made to raise funds for Marcelino’s funeral costs, as well as her mother’s medical bills: https://www.gofundme.com/dk4vm-funeral-expenses-and-medical-bills.
