Filipino American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has been making an impact through her advocacy work, and one college graduate is now sharing how the singer’s generosity helped her cross the finish line.

Jamie Causey, a first-generation college student who graduated from the University of Alabama in August 2025, recently revealed on TikTok that Rodrigo privately gave her $5,000 to cover the cost of her final semester after seeing a video about her financial struggles.

Before graduating, Causey had shared a candid TikTok explaining that her scholarships and grants had run out with only two classes left to complete her degree. She said the video wasn’t meant to ask for financial help but to show the reality many students face when trying to afford college.

“And I just record and I said, ‘Hey, I’m first gen.’ I was not expecting anyone to pay for it or feel bad for me. I just wanted to let them into the reality of college,” Causey said.

Surprise offer to help

Unknown to Causey, Rodrigo had already been following her journey online after seeing a post celebrating her 21st birthday. After watching the video about her tuition struggles, the singer privately reached out with an offer to help.

“Olivia reached out to me privately,” Causey said while sharing screenshots of their conversation. “She told me she loved my videos, and I was a source of positivity and light for her, and she wanted to help me graduate. And she did.”

Causey admitted she initially thought the message was fake and even asked a friend who was a Rodrigo fan whether the account was legitimate. It was only after noticing the verified checkmark that she realized it was really the Grammy-winning artist contacting her.

The donation allowed Causey to complete her final semester and graduate in August 2025. She described Rodrigo’s generosity as life-changing and said she could never thank the singer enough for making her dream of earning a degree possible.

Looking back, Causey explained that sharing the story publicly was her way of expressing gratitude, not only to Rodrigo but also to everyone who supported her throughout her academic journey and made her feel that she belonged.

She added that she hopes to meet Rodrigo one day to personally thank her for the kindness she showed a stranger.

Causey said the singer’s decision to help without expecting anything in return reminded her of the importance of giving back to others, a lesson she plans to carry with her long after graduation.
