The Filipino community in New York and around the world is celebrating a landmark sports moment after the New York Knicks clinched the 2026 NBA Championship, with Filipino American guard Jordan Clarkson playing a key supporting role in the title run.
The championship win, sealed in Game 5 against the San Antonio Spurs, ended a 53-year drought for the Knicks whose last NBA title came in 1973.
The victory not only restored the franchise’s place at the top of the league but also carried added significance for Filipino fans, as Clarkson became the first player of Filipino descent to win an NBA championship.

In a public statement, the Philippine Consulate General in New York extended its congratulations to both the team and Clarkson, highlighting the broader impact of the win.
The Consulate emphasized pride in Clarkson’s achievement and what it represents for Filipinos and Filipino Americans across the globe.
“We also take pride in Filipino-American Jordan Clarkson, shooting guard of the New York Knicks, whose achievement is a proud moment for the Filipino diaspora,” they said.
On the court, Clarkson provided valuable minutes off the bench throughout the Finals series. In the decisive Game 5, he delivered a veteran presence and a timely scoring boost, finishing with 15 points that helped stabilize the Knicks’ offense during crucial stretches.
The Spurs pushed hard in the series along with Fil-Am rookie Dylan Harper, but the Knicks ultimately closed out the matchup with defensive discipline, securing the title in front of an electrified crowd.
