Previously, re-sharing a friend’s Story on Instagram required being tagged in it. Now, with Instagram’s feature update, public Stories can be shared directly, even if you haven’t been mentioned.
A new “Add to Story” button now appears when viewing Stories from public accounts. By selecting this option, users are taken to the Story creation screen, where they can make minor edits before reposting it to their own Story. The reshared content will automatically include the original creator’s username.

“Once shared, the Story appears in the same format as posts you’ve been tagged in,” Instagram explained. This keeps reshared content visually consistent while making the process far more seamless than before.
However, this update only applies to public accounts.
Stories shared from private profiles remain protected, maintaining user privacy. Public account holders who prefer not to have their content reshared can easily opt out by toggling off the “Allow Sharing to Story” option in their Story Settings.
The new resharing feature reflects Instagram’s ongoing efforts to encourage more engagement while respecting user control over their content.
Users can now easily amplify posts they find interesting, funny or inspiring, without the hassle of tagging or requesting permission.
