iGaming push in Virginia could attract billions in income

The joint subcommittee, a group looking to push the legalization of iGaming in Virginia, has argued that the industry could bring in up to $5 billion in revenue over the next few years. This comes as the group has also suggested the creation of the Virginia Gaming Commission,  which would regulate such activities.

It is worth noting that iGaming has significantly taken root all over the world, including in several U.S states. The convenience of playing casino games at any given time and potentially winning money has proven to be a hit with players. As this join coinpokeraustralia.com article shows, international sites are attracting players by providing accessible, fair, and fun casino gaming.

Plus, Marcus Simon, a Democrat from Fairfax, has explained that establishing a legal framework for igaming within Virginia will offer residents a safe alternative. Currently, many players turn to offshore sites when there are no options within their own state. However, not all of these sites are properly regulated, representing a significant revenue that leaves the state instead of staying within it.

In his formal proposal, Simon suggests that online casino operators could partner with existing licensed casinos. Under these partnerships, the former would be granted licensing rights, meaning players can immediately meet their needs. The fees paid for these licensing rights can then support regulatory efforts to ensure that the sector does not become the wild west. Not only would this keep things uniform, but it could also help various goodwill measures.

Future outlook for Virginia’s gaming market

States have reported billions of dollars in revenue in a single calendar year. We only need to take a look at places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City to see that entire economies can be powered by casinos, whether land-based or online. Consumers are clearly willing to go across state lines to get their needs met, and keeping things within Virginia only keeps them safer.

Virginia’s evolving gaming landscape

Still, there have been conflicting claims from either side of the aisle. Even land-based casinos are a relatively new concept within Virginia. Only a handful have popped up since 2022, and it is still finding its footing, though they have reported high revenue numbers. The 2026 session could see the establishment of the Virginia Gaming Commission, and hopefully, the conversation will be revisited once again.

Global examples and ongoing debates

It’s worth noting that Virginia is not alone in its revisiting of the topic of eye gaming. Many places around the world are taking their stance on the matter. Countries like New Zealand and even provinces in Canada, like Calgary, are fully welcoming the iGaming market for the benefits it will offer.

Many have pointed out that, outside of the tax revenue, it can create employment for many within the state, and this is considered a net positive. However, it continues to receive its own criticism, especially concerning regulations to allow for uniform practices from one state to another.

What’s next for Virginia?

As the iGaming sector is only on track to expand, there will be a race among the different states to secure their market share. Those who can set up proper regulation in time will be able to retain the revenue from the industry.

Others, however, will see their residents continue to turn to offshore sites to have their needs met. As 2026 approaches, we will have a better idea of whether Virginia will move forward with any form of iGaming regulations and, if so, its impact on the population.
