In today’s hyper-connected world, where digital footprints are visible with every scroll and click, privacy is becoming a prized commodity. Instagram’s latest update has sparked conversations on just how much visibility users are willing to allow.

Meta announced several new features for Instagram, including the ability to repost public Reels and feed posts and a more controversial addition, which is a location-sharing option through the Instagram map. This new tool lets users share their most recent location with select friends directly on the app.

According to Meta’s press release, “You can now choose to responsibly share your location with friends you pick using the Instagram map.”

By default, the feature is switched off. Users who choose to opt in can decide whether to share their location with all friends, close friends or only specific people. They can also choose to block location sharing in certain areas or with specific individuals.

Location updates are refreshed whenever the app is opened or when a user returns to it after it has been running in the background.

Parents using Instagram’s supervision settings for teens will also have control over whether their child can share a location and will receive notifications if their teen activates the feature.

How to turn the location-sharing off

For those concerned about privacy, location sharing can be turned off at any time. The map feature is accessible via the Messages tab: tap the map icon at the top of your inbox, head to the settings menu, and select “no one” to disable sharing. Alternatively, users can opt in by selecting friends, close friends, or hand-picking certain contacts.

While Meta emphasizes that location sharing is voluntary and customizable, the update has drawn mixed reactions. With social media platforms constantly evolving to deepen user engagement, the line between sharing and oversharing continues to blur.
