‘Lilo & Stitch’ keeps box office crown with $63 million weekend

LOS ANGELES – “Lilo & Stitch” hauled in $63 million in its second weekend in North American theaters to easily lead all films, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The live-action remake of Disney’s 2002 animated “Lilo & Stitch” was coming off a record $183 million opening for the four-day Memorial Day weekend.
“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” was second with $27.3 million in its second week, Comscore reported.
`Karate Kid: Legends” opened in third place with $21 million. The reboot of the popular franchise, which launched with 1984’s “The Karate Kid,” stars original lead Ralph Macchio, martial arts legend Jackie Chan and newcomer Ben Wang.
Fourth place went to “Final Destination Bloodlines,” which grossed $10.8 million Friday through Sunday in its third weekend in theaters.
The horror film “Bring Her Back” opened in fifth place with $ 7 million, followed by “Sinners,” which made another $5.2 million in its seventh week in theaters.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Thunderbolts” ($4.8 million), “Friendship” ($2.5 million), “The Last Rodeo” ($2.1 million) and “J-hope Tour: `Hope on the Stage’ in Japan: Live ($939,173).
Disney’s live-action hybrid “Lilo & Stitch” surpassed “Sinners” to become the second-highest grossing movie of the year with $280.1 million in domestic ticket sales.
Globally, its running total is $610.8 million. “Sinners,” meanwhile, is still going strong in its seventh weekend with another $5.2 million, bumping it to $267.1 million domestically and $350.1 million globally.
Leading the newcomers was Sony’s “Karate Kid: Legends,” with an estimated $21 million from 3,809 locations.
The movie brings Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio together to train a new kid, the kung fu prodigy Li Fong ( Ben Wang ).
Chan starred in a 2010 reboot of the 1984 original, while Macchio has found a new generation of fans in the series “Cobra Kai,” which just concluded a six-season run. (With CNS report)
