Filipino American advocacy groups led a rally outside the Washington County Courthouse in Oregon on Monday during a hearing for the alleged killer of Fil-Am nurse Melissa Jubane.
Jubane, a 32-year-old newlywed nurse, was found murdered last September after she was reported missing. Her neighbor at a Beaverton apartment complex, 27-year-old Bryce Schubert, was arrested.
Schubert has been charged with first degree murder, kidnapping and second degree abuse of a corpse. He has pleaded not guilty.
Authorities requested Judge Lemoine to seal the case documents, including the search warrant affidavit, summary of evidence and probable cause statement.
At the status hearing on Monday, lawyers said they are still in the process of investigating and constructing a case, according to Fox12.
“Why we want justice for Melissa – we see ourselves in her and we want systemic change so that women no longer experience this type of violence,” Gabriela Portland chairperson Mak Durias said.
“It’s being able to live in a society that no longer accepts, normalizes, or tolerates what happened to her.”

Community members demand justice for Melissa Jubane
Gabriela Portland, Malaya Portland, Gabriela Seattle, Bayan Oregon, Half The Sky and International Women’s Alliance mobilized community members to attend the hearing at the Washington County Courthouse.
The groups have vowed to attend every hearing to demand justice for the slain Fil-Am nurse.
Schubert did not show up in person at his Sept. 16 court hearing. Instead, he appeared remotely from the county jail, where his attorney entered a not-guilty plea.

In December 2024, Gabriela Portland led a protest rally at the Washington County Courthouse during the fourth hearing for Jubane’s case.
They called on the community to “pack the courthouse” at the Monday hearing to show solidarity with Jubane’s family and to spread awareness about violence against women.
The next court hearing is scheduled for March 10.
